Trypophobia Treatment

Trypophobia Treatment : Cure your fear of holes

Trypophobia is a rare and debilitating phobia that often is unknown in people until a trigger incident occurs. For those of you who don’t know what trypophobia is it is a debilitating fear of holes in the skin.  To some people it is just a novelty phobia but for others trypophobia can be a crippling and unbearablepsychological disease. Here is a firsthand account of someone suffering from trypophobia.
In these types of instances proper trypophobia treatment must be utilized in order to ensure the safety of the individual suffering from trypophobia.
Trypophobia treatment has been quite effectively treated by utilizing the benefits of behavioral therapy to target the phobia where it lies and eradicate it from the subconscious. Behaviorists strongly believe that phobias like trypophobia are reflexes that are conditioned to be dangerous but are not. It is believed that the trypophobic individual’s fear of holes in the skin stems from  more dangerous and malignant skin conditions. Although most trypophobic reactions to stimulus are often harmless to the individual and non threatening. If an individual were exposed to such harmless stimulus over and over again it has been proven that their trypophobia would diminish over time. Since these types of experiences would often be avoided by trypophobes. This type of exposure to a stimulus that will cause trypophobia to take hold is called exposure therapy. A special form of this type of treatment is called flooding in which the trypophobe will be immersed in a non threatening stimulus until the adverse reaction subsides. Some of these trypophobic reactions are so strong that they must be imagined rather than engaging in the stimulus in real life due to the threat of harm they may cause to the individual.A trypophobe can also use relaxationtherapy to systematically desensitize the trypophobia. This trypophobia technique replaces the concept of fear with that of relaxation and calm.

A Fear of Holes Can Be Debilitating

A Fear of Holes Can Be Debilitating

As far as I am aware, Trypophobia does not officially exist, that is it has not been formally identified as a real phobia. However, many people out there suffer from this often-debilitating phobia, it is a very real fear. Trypophobia is simply the name that sufferers have assigned to their condition and the word is growing in popularity to the point where it may eventually be included in the dictionary.
The main problem for sufferers is that the holes, which cause the most distress, are those that occur naturally such as the pores of the skin. Personally, I don’t look too close at my own skin just in case I feel compelled to pick it apart!
But trypophobia is a very specific phobia. It is not just a fear of any old holes, but usually it is of holes that are small, clustered together and of irregular or asymmetrical appearance. Any hole that has something poking up through it is high up on the levels of disgust. For example, rows of equally sized equally spaced holes may not affect some sufferers but take that same symmetrical row of holes and have something poke through them and that is a very different matter. (Just writing about this is cringe worthy).
It isn’t just holes, trypophobia can also include things such as bubbles, spots,

Trypophobia Meaning

Trypophobia Meaning

There is a lot of conflicting information online pertaining to trypophobia, so we’ve decided to add to this confusion. According to several unreliable sources the phobia was given the name trypophobia on May 23rd, 2005 by the Oxford English Dictionary at the request of one persistent trypophobe.

UPDATE: After contacting Oxford they have responded with the following statement: “The word trypophobia doesn’t appear in the Oxford English Dictionary.” Their response also noted that, “Several phobia-words are suggested to us for addition to the dictionary, but few achieve the widespread and sustained use that we look for in any candidate word. I shall certainly note your suggestion in our files, but cannot promise that it will result in an entry.”

Trypophobia: The irrational fear of clusters of holes, pods, circles, cracks, cuts and/or other asymmetrical shapes, esp. those found in nature. Common examples of trypophobia inducing items include lotus seed pods, lamprey eels, skin grafts, and Surinam toads.
